M
ental Health Insurance coverage for individual and family therapy varies greatly among insurance providers.  With the adoption of Washington State's Mental Health Parity Act in 2005, many consumers now have expanded access to mental health coverage.  We encourage our clients to clearly understand the mental health benefits they are entitled to with their current health insurance.

The Washington State Parity Law

What Is Mental Health Parity?

·        “Mental health parity” means that mental health services are covered by insurance in a manner comparable in scope and limitations to other health services.

·        Mental health parity means insurers must provide the same annual or lifetime dollar limits, co-payments, deductibles, co-insurance, out-of-pocket maximums, and day/visit limits for mental health services as for other health services.

Which Health Plans Are Covered by the Law?

·        Commercial group insurance plans regulated by the Washington State Insurance Commissioner and offered by an employer of more than 50 employees;

·        All state employee health plans offered by the Public Employees Benefits Board, administered by the Washington State Health Care Authority; and

·        Washington State Basic Health.

Which Plans Are Not Covered?

·        Self-insured plans are not covered by the new law.  You should ask your personnel or human resources department if your health insurance plan is a self-insured plan.

·        Federal programs, including Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, and the Federal Employees Health Benefit Program

·        Commercial group health insurance plans offered by companies with 50 or fewer employees (small businesses)

·        Health Insurance policies purchased by individuals.
